On the palate, blueberry, plum, cassis and earthy notes converge around a fresh core of bright acidity and plush tannin lending this wine structure, vitality and grace. There is precision in the expression of fruit and an elegant yet ample succulent structure that progresses to a finish that is long and lasting with hints of blueberries, spiced cherries, exotic incense and fresh rose petals. This lovely wine is drinking well now but may also be enjoyed over the next five to eight years with proper cellaring.

The Campo Viejo 2004 Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Working from selected vineyards and after careful elaboration at a controlled temperature, this wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels and 18 months in the bottle to complete the ageing. This red offers plum and black cherry fruit with cedar and sage leaf notes. Great with all grilled meats especially when served in a wild mushroom sauce.

Fisher Vineyards’ Mountain Estate Chardonnay is produced from vines grown on high elevation, steep, rocky slopes facing northeast. La Gravette de Certan is the second wine of the famous Pomerol property, Vieux Château Certan. The 2006 is one of the best examples of this wine ever produced. The wine is wonderfully rich, with lush velvety textures of spicy black fruit flavors, excellent balance and hints of toasty oak in the finish. This wine will cellar well for 5 to 10 years.

Mas de Guiot is owned and operated by the Cornut family. They are true believers in sustainable agriculture, using no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers on any of their vineyards or crops. The blend for this bottling is 40% Grenache and 60% Syrah, both grown at very low yields and hand-harvested. A great Southern Rhône red revealing pepper-infused blackberry fruit. The round finish is laced with a hint of lavender. Superb with an herb encrusted rack of lamb.

The Ponzi 2007 Tavola was aged in French oak for 11 months (25% new). A barrel selection is made for Tavola, then racked and bottled by gravity without fining or filtration. This wine has been bottle aged for five months before release. The perfumed nose shows spiced cherries and maple syrup leading to a perfectly balanced, sweet mid-palate of dark cherry and red plums. The finish is long and seamless. This wine would liven up a pan seared duck breast with a cherry glaze.

From an estate in Greve in Chianti, the 2007 Querciabella is predominantly sangiovese (95 percent) with a small portion of cabernet sauvignon. There’s no extraneous tannin to get in the way of the rose scents, the strawberry and musky cherry flavors--just a fine structure and clean, fragrant length of flavor.

Multiple vineyard sources allowed the assembly of a blend that showcases fruitiness and refreshing acidity supported by a surprising richness and length of finish. The Swanson 2005 Oakville Estate Merlot is an ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’, with the extract and power expected of its Oakville provenance, yet possessing the finesse, grace and complexity of a right-bank Bordeaux. Smoky blackberry and black licorice aromas. Round, ripe and supple, with lingering thickness and fine-grained tannin on the palate, echoing very nicely the afore-mentioned aromas. While certainly drinkable today, this Merlot will continue to cellar nicely for 6 to 8 more years.

The Watkins Family Barn Block vineyard is located at 1400 feet on the southwest side of Mt. Veeder. The red volcanic rock slopes rise up in the bright sunlight above the fog filled valley. The stress of mountain farming produces grapes with amazing concentration and color. The resulting wine is richly layered with black currant, dark chocolate and lingering notes of roasted coffee. Only 240 cases were produced.
