Meet Us
Back in 1949 a man known to many Houstonians simply as Richard opened his first liquor store at 2124 South Shepherd. In the old country, his family drank wine with every evening meal, so it was only natural for Richard to become Houston's first serious wine merchant. His philosophy: know your product well, keep prices low and treat your customers like family. This is the philosophy that still guides us today.
Our staff has the experience, the service, and the "thirst" for always learning more. Stop by any of our stores, and you'll be impressed with their depth of knowledge and the desire to please your palate.

I developed a passion for the beverage industry early on in life. I have pursued my wine education through the prestigious Court of Masters Sommelier. I've successfully completed two of the four levels and look forward to the challenges and accomplishments ahead. I earned my Bachelors degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the Conrad N. Hilton College at the University of Houston. I've had over five years of experience in various areas of customer service and retail, which I only hope to build upon as customer service representative for Richard's Liquor Store on Kirby. Anything I can do to help you, just let me know!
Jonathan Honefenger - Lead Sommelier
I first obtained my certified sommelier status with the Court of Master Sommeliers and then passed levels one and two of the International Sommelier Guild. I gained my Certified Specialist in Wine and Certified Spanish Wine Educator while working at Brennans until it was destroyed by a fire during Hurricane Ike. My first interest in wine began while studying in Eastern Europe where I researched vineyards and wines that had been affected by communistic rule. After coming back stateside, I had thought I wanted a career in politics and law, but my passion for wine and travels drew me into the world of wine. Back to Houston, I was taken under the wing of Chef and Sommelier Peter Garcia, owner of El Meson. I guess my favorite distinctions were being featured in the MyTable August-September 2008 cover article "Houston's Baby Somms" and winning Best New Sommelier of 2009 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, an annual honor only shared among five individuals from around the nation. We all, along with the Editor and Owner of Wine & Spirits Magazine, were invited on a tour of some of the best vineyards and wines Australia has to offer. While I am into wines from around the world, my passion is certainly rooted in Burgundy. I look forward to finding new and exciting wines to please your palate, and to explore new areas and tastes in your own world of wines. Stop on by and say hello, drop off your contact information to me so I can keep you on our mailing lists and when new wines come out!

I've been in the liquor business for 37 years. 15 of those were with A&D Liquors as owner, Liquor and Wine Buyer and Supervisor over 5 stores. I also worked briefly with Accent Wine Distributor as a wine consultant and wine salesman. I've been with Richards for 22 years now as a store director at various locations, the Liquor buyer for two years and am now currently one of the wine buyers for the company. Look for the biggest smile in the store and you'll find me!

In 2007, I successfully completed the Court of Master Sommelier Examination, and I joined Richard's team this last May. I guess I couldn't help but gravitate to the wine and spirits retail industry. I grew up in the restaurant business in Houston. My family owned and operated the 11th Street Café from the early eighties until the early 2000s (a long time of success for a restaurant in Houston). I graduated from the University of Houston's Conrad Hilton School with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. It was here that I was introduced to the world of wine. After graduating, I found a position in restaurant management as the formal dining room manager with the Warwick Hotel. Working with wine list development and training service personnel in the presentation of wines became the focus of my career and led me from the Warwick Hotel to the famous La Tour D'Argent where prior to its closing I gained invaluable experience with French and domestic wines. From the prestigious Farmington Country Club to working in wine sales, which opened up the world of wine to me, I learned a wider range of wines to include substantial brands from the New World, as well as many Old World favorites. I still consider French wines among my favorites and in particular, I appreciate the values available from the southern Rhone and south of France.

I have been in the wine & spirits industry since the 70s, when I began working for my father-in-law at A&D Liquors. I joined Richard's in 1978, and I have been the manager at the same Woodway Richard's for the last 8 years. I am known for being a longtime liquor and beer afficianado. I have since learned so much about wine, being at Richard's, that I've grown to love it as well. My preference is for red wines, especially the bigger, full-bodied wines of California, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Italy and South America. It's an exciting industry, but why I love it best is getting to know my customers and what they like (and I enjoy our staff here, as well!)

I began my career in the wine and spirits industry when I joined the Richard's team in 1982. I thoroughly enjoy my opportunities to travel the states and abroad to different wine destinations, learning the viticulture and enology side of the industry. My responsibilities lay with the Class B wholesale business, but my devotion is in building a loyal retail/on premise customer base. Whatever it takes. Our customers' tastes are ever-evolving, and I like to keep ahead of the curve of the current trends in liquors, mixers, garnishes, wines and more. From production to the premises, my end goal is the same: the satisfied consumer. My wine of choice is Zinfandel, which I've been told matches "my spicy yet savvy personality."

I learned this industry from the bottom up, literally. While working my way through college part-time at Richard's, I think I've done a bit of everything: clerk/stocker, assistant manager, manager and general stores supervisor, all the while learning about the products and the business. I have been granted the privilege of visiting wineries in California, Bordeaux and Alsace, where I can see winemaking "from the ground to the bottle". I have also taken advantage of local opportunities to learn about wines and educate my palate. I enjoy both red and white wine and an occasional Single Malt. I am fluent in Spanish and am currently managing the Voss Road Richard's. Stop on by and visit, we may both learn things!
